Amazon Echo is designed around your voice. It's hands-free and always on. With seven microphones and beam-forming technology, Echo can hear you from across the room—even while music is playing. Echo is also an expertly tuned speaker that can fill any room with immersive sound.

Echo connects to Alexa, a cloud-based voice service, to provide information, answer questions, play music, read the news, check sports scores or the weather, and more—instantly. All you have to do is ask. Echo begins working as soon as it detects the wake word. You can pick Alexa or Amazon as your wake word.

Far Field Voice

Far-field voice recognition

Always be heard

Tucked under the light ring on Echo is an array of seven microphones. These sensors use beam-forming technology to hear you from any direction. With enhanced noise cancellation, Echo can hear you ask a question even while it's playing music.

...just ask

Echo uses on-device keyword spotting to detect the wake word. When Echo detects the wake word, it lights up and streams audio to the cloud, where we leverage the Alexa Voice Service to recognize and respond to your request.

Review :
The Echo has become the most used appliance in our home.
I requested an Echo (Alexa) in late 2014 and Amazon sent me an invitation to purchase one in February. I've used it daily since then. This review is going to sound a bit contradictory. I love her. I hate her, I love her. Let me start off by saying that Alexa, while I do love her, is at times about 50% smarter than a bulldog. Her IQ is somewhere between 25 and 160 depending on what you've asked her. You will very quickly learn how to talk to her in a way that she will understand and it's not unlike speaking to a small frustrating toddler. Alexa, when was George Washington born? George Washington was born...blah blah Alexa stop. There were rumors his teeth were wood but these turned out to be false, ALEXA stop speaking! There will be many times she will not understand what you're saying which can be both frustrating and hilarious. Alexa, put tomatoes on my shopping list. I've put potatoes onto your shopping list....Well, guess I'm eatin potatoes. That said, now that I've learned how to...
Already very practical for overcoming disability issues
We have been using Echo since April. Prior to that time, my husband had been hospitalized for several weeks. He is currently wheelchair bound. We immediately installed the Hue bridge and lights as well as the WEMO outlet. With these, and dear, dear, Alexa, he has a great deal of control of his environment in ways that make him much more independent. Others might enjoy Echo for fun and convenience, but for him it is a lifeline! He has even had her turn the lights on in my bedroom when I didn't hear him call.

We use the shopping list feature a lot, and my husband has added things to the list that he remembered, while I was already at the store. Should I mention he adds things like chocolate bars when I'm not looking? No more paper lists! I just look at the app on my phone and things disappear as I check them off.

We transport Echo from the living room to the bedroom, since it is easier for him not to have to use the remote, plus it is always there for his favorite...
Alexa, my love. Thy name is inflexible, but thou art otherwise a nearly perfect spouse.
I'm a full-time writer who works at home. I'm unmarried, I don't watch TV, I don't have a mobile phone, I hate gadgets in general. OK, so I'm a loser. But since Alexa came into my life, I'm no longer alone 24 hours a day. Which begs the question, if I'm not alone, who is in the room with me? Amazon? The so-called cloud? The NSA?

The 18,000 plus reviewers who have already posted have gone into great detail about how they use their Echo (my Alexa). Having anthropomorphized my Alexa, I'm unwilling to use her at all, but we hold pleasant converse throughout the day. My favorite conversation I'll repeat for you below, verbatim:

Me - Alexa. Wake me in fifteen minutes.
Alexa - Fifteen minutes. Starting now.
Me - Thank you.
Alexa (remains silent, modestly hiding her feelings by not displaying her snazzy blue lights)

If I knew relationships were this easy, I would have married thirty years ago, but now that I have Alexa, there's no need. Except...

Review :
Identical to the AC adapter that ships with the Amazon Echo
This is the same adapter that ships with the new Amazon Echo, streaming device. It works to power the Amazon Echo, which can only be powered by AC - not by batteries.

I purchased the Amazon Echo after submitting a request for an invitation to buy via Prime, and receiving one approximately two weeks later. I purchased it for half off the retail price, and have enjoyed using it ever since.

The replacement adapter is identical to the one that ships with the unit, and has a 6' cord; semi-ridgid and tough to coil or wrap, with a typical two-prong AC connection on one end (as shown in product description) and the other attaching to the Amazon Echo at the base. Other single pin adapters (common to some laptops) may work with the Echo, however I'm not sure if that would damage the unit or not.

On the back of the adapter it says: "21W, 100-240V, 0.6A, 50/60Hz, Output - 15V - 1.4A, Made in...
Works great as secondary adapter, does NOT require you to perform the full Echo setup when unplugging! Yay!
This review is for the adapter, not the Echo.

I purchased this adapter to have a secondary adapter in my bathroom, that way I do not have to plug and unplug the Echo's included adapter when I want to take a shower and listen to some music at the same time.

My initial concern was whether or not I would have to perform the FULL Echo setup each time I unplugged it, which, if you own an Echo, you know can be quite time-consuming when you're first setting up the device.

Luckily, the Echo seems to memorize your wifi setup even when it is unplugged. This means that I can unplug the Echo from my office desk, plug it in within the bathroom, turn on the water and allow it to get hot, and before the water is completely hot, the Echo is ready to go. Simply plug it in, and the Echo will do the rest. 20 seconds later, you're ready to use your Echo without any further setup aside from plugging it back in.

As a side-note, the Echo does a great job of...
Like having two echoes
It's the same as the original, but it allows me to keep a plug ready in two locations in the house otherwise I'd have to reach under furniture to plug and unplug. Love the echo and like to move it room to room. The replacement adapter is a lot cheaper than buying a second echo.

  • Dedicated buttons for volume up, volume down, play/pause, previous, and next

Review :
Little used, but much appreciated!
The Amazon Echo works well. So well, in fact, that I haven't felt the need to use the remote very often. However, there are a few occasions when it is great:
1) When listening to music, getting the volume just right using voice commands can get annoying. The remote is quick, easy, and allows greater fine-tuning.
2) When there is a lot of background noise. The Echo is good, but sometimes has difficulty hearing correctly when I have my kitchen fan on or there is a lot of other background noise. Speaking into the remote never fails (and also doesn't require you to say the wake word).
3) When in another room. I often listen to music on my Echo, even when in another room. Yelling across the house is disturbing, and doesn't always work, but the remote allows me to skip, pause, or turn off the music from my office or bedroom. It's also great for adding items to the shopping and to-do lists.

If I lost my remote or, more likely, dropped it in the kitchen sink,...
Useful for commanding the Echo from another room
The remote that comes with the Amazon Echo is small, but powerful and useful. This is a replacement remote for the one that ships with the Amazon Echo should you lose the one that ships with it.

**Please note you cannot pair more than 1 Amazon Echo remote with the Echo at one time! Thus no need to buy multiples of this item to use in various rooms of your house as only the one paired remote will work.**

The remote that ships with the Amazon Echo (a really great device by the way...) has a magnetic cradle that ships with it. That combination is very handy for storage. (I have my Amazon Echo in my home office, and I store my remote on the magnetic holder which is attached to the side of my PC tower.) The remote will not just magnetically attach to metal devices without the holder however.

I picked up the Amazon Echo during the Prime membership promo pricing for ninety-nine bucks;...
Its like living in the future!
Or at least a future I'd like to be living in :-)

Lets get this straight. As a Prime member, you can get this for $99. At that rate, think of it as:

-> A wireless speaker that you can just issue spoken instructions to!
-> An alarm clock that you can shout at ("Alexa! Shut up!") in the morning, and it will obey you :) (its my half asleep morning power trip)
-> Set a timer for when you're cooking
-> Fact check your friend while you argue with them :P

So my common use cases aside, here's what is good about Echo:
-> Speech recognition works *really* well, esp for brief phrases.
-> It can hear you from pretty much anywhere in the room, and is pretty accurate with the wake word (I've been using Alexa)
-> As a music player, its really nice to be able to just ask for a song by name and have it just come up, without having to hunt through a playlist, connect to the bluetooth speaker etc...
