With humour and sensitivity, Boys, Girls & Body Science provides no-nonsense answers for children - and parents - with questions about sex. Specifically designed for young readers, Boys, Girls & Body Science walks children through the wonders of their bodies in a direct, easy-to-read manner. The story begins with Nicholas, 7, and Jenny, 5, learning about different types of science in their class - from ecology to the digestive system. Then Meg Hickling, a guest speaker, comes to talk to them about a new type of science. Hickling talks about the "science names" for the children's body parts, about good and bad touches and about making babies. She coaches the children not to be embarrassed or shy about body science: "We are going to make this just like a science lesson, we will learn to think like a scientist and we will learn the scientific names for our private parts," she says.

Hickling is a Registered Nurse who has been teaching sexual education for over 25 years. She is an outstanding educator, and her ability to convey difficult material with sensitivity, gentle humour and warmth distinguishes her as a remarkable teacher and role model. In this latest publication, Hickling brings her award-winning lesson into the homes, schools and libraries of inquisitive children everywhere!

Review :
Great approach, well-written, great book
I took a chance buying this book when no-one had written any reviews about it, but the publisher write-up looked so good I had to give it a try - and I am quite glad I did. In the book, Meg, a nurse, is invited to a classroom to explain about what she calls 'body science' (reproduction). In a most gentle, sensitive, and delicate manner, she teaches the children to think about 'embarrassing' things in the way that a scientist would, then she goes on to teach about those 'embarrassing' subjects. This book is written on a very basic level, big illustrations and only a few paragraphs of text on each page, obviously written for a younger audience. The book perceptively takes into account what the children's responses and reactions may be, which makes the reader feel like they are understood, and makes them feel at ease. My 8 year old daughter understood everything and was not 'grossed out' at all, to her it was all very matter-of-fact, but my 10 year old son groaned a big 'yuck' at...
Perfect book on the facts of life for my 8 year old
This is really an extraordinarily well balanced presentation of the facts of life for an 8 or 9 year old. The characters in the book reacted exactly like my 8 year old when hearing the somewhat embarrassing (for him) facts of life. My son laughed pretty hard as the character in the book said "Yuck!" when hearing how babies are made. This book had tactful but direct illustrations and overall the book is a wonderful aide to any parent who wants to make sure their children understand the basic facts of life.

Perfect Book!
I bought this book for my 10 yr old son. I made sure I read it first then gave it to him to read. We followed with a great discussion. I had researched a lot of other books and now that I have had the book/conversation with my son I am glad I chose this book! I was not ready to discuss masterbating, wet dreams or homosexuality with my child yet and this book DID NOT mention these things. It was simple and straightforward. A perfect Primary Grade Book!

It's Never Too Late...
It's never too late to learn and apply new information. In my 70s, I started practicing the exercises set forth in Katy's new book. When I began, I had to wear orthotics in all my shoes to walk comfortably. I had been unable to walk barefoot for at least 15 years. After following the exercises for a matter of months and using my Earth Shoes, I was able to throw away my orthotics, walk several miles daily without any discomfort, and return to the joys of walking barefoot - especially at the beach. This book gives the information needed to make a significant difference in healthy living. The rest is up to you:)

happy feet, happy pelvic floor
i had already learned about katy bowman before this book came out. i found her while i was searching for ways to heal my plantar facsiitis(which i had for 2 years) and my pelvic floor which had not been functioning right since i gave birth 7 years ago. by doing the exercises/ stretches all the time, keeping my feet straight and changing my footwear, i now have no heel pain and can sneeze without peeing. the book contains the essential exercises to do that. she gives you the tools you need to empower yourself to heal your body. i am a dancer and have studied and participated in many different exercises and healing modalities. this has been the only thing that has helped me.

Healthy Feet Are a Birthright!
I'm in my mid seventies; never occurred to me that my stiff feet, overly high arches, bunions, curled toes, and bent over little toes were that way due to neglect not to aging. I considered the largely cosmetic practices of a monthly toe nail polish, daily foot bath and occasional foot massage the outer limits of foot care. Bowman's book has brought me to understand that actually, using her easily understood teaching, how I choose to shoe my feet or not, how I give my feet and toes specific exercises during the day makes the difference in foot health. Also positively affected are my all over body and spirit health, and ability to enjoy the benefits of daily whole body walking. I encourage anyone wishing this treasure to go for it and read Bowman's book as a first step. Then apply her teachings. Good luck!

***A NEW YORK TIMES BESTELLER***

An essential exploration of why and how women’s sexuality works—based on groundbreaking research and brain science—that will radically transform your sex life into one filled with confidence and joy.

Researchers have spent the last decade trying to develop a “pink pill” for women to function like Viagra does for men. So where is it? Well, for reasons this book makes crystal clear, that pill will never exist—but as a result of the research that’s gone into it, scientists in the last few years have learned more about how women’s sexuality works than we ever thought possible, and Come as You Are explains it all.

The first lesson in this essential, transformative book by Dr. Emily Nagoski is that every woman has her own unique sexuality, like a fingerprint, and that women vary more than men in our anatomy, our sexual response mechanisms, and the way our bodies respond to the sexual world. So we never need to judge ourselves based on others’ experiences. Because women vary, and that’s normal.

Second lesson: sex happens in a context. And all the complications of everyday life influence the context surrounding a woman’s arousal, desire, and orgasm.

Cutting-edge research across multiple disciplines tells us that the most important factor for women in creating and sustaining a fulfilling sex life, is not what you do in bed or how you do it, but how you feel about it. Which means that stress, mood, trust, and body image are not peripheral factors in a woman’s sexual wellbeing; they are central to it. Once you understand these factors, and how to influence them, you can create for yourself better sex and more profound pleasure than you ever thought possible.

And Emily Nagoski can prove it.

Review :
The BEST Sex Book I've Ever Read. The BEST Life Book I've Ever Read.
Come As You Are is absolutely the best sex book I've ever read. I used to buy so many trying to figure out how desire and arousal worked and while I learned good things, this was the book that felt like a warm hug that explained everything and how I could make this work for me. What I did not expect was to learn so much about my brain, and how *exactly* that was connected to sex, and why feeling joyful and content in life in general applies to sex specifically. I'd heard that sex and life were intertwined; the whole "it's all connected" but it never made sense until reading Emily Nagoski detailing HOW and WHY.

So all of Emily's blog posts come to life in this book, and every time I re-read chapters, I feel like the science connects in a deeper way. She covers attachment, sex that advances the plot in relationships, emotions, and mindfulness, just to name some topics. My favorite part of the book was learning about how the brain interprets goals and effort, and how...
Magnificent!
This is an astonishingly good book - written with warmth, wisdom, humor, and heart. Although it's designed to be a self-help book for the general public, I have a suspicion its greater value will be in the fresh and original ideas it will offer to sex therapists. I look forward to using some of Nagoski's assessment, education, and treatment techniques in my own sex therapy practice. The book is also a cornucopia of clinically relevant behavioral science research. I believe many sex clinicians will find themselves returning to it again and again for inspiration and guidance. Well done!

Scientifically accurate, completely relevant
Ever wondered if something's wrong with you? What happened to your sex "drive", or why you're body's arousal doesn't match you're brain's, or just whether you're normal? This book distills all the latest research about women's sexuality into something that is immediately useful into people's lives. As someone who struggles with changes in sexual function, I found the material life-changing. The writing is clear, friendly, accessible, and just a bit nerdy. The author acknowledges that the focus is on cis women's sexuality (of any orientation) since that's where there's both a huge need for good information and enough scientific research to be evidence-based, but I believe the information is relevant for everyone with a body.

Seriously, read it. It'll change your (sex) life.

New York Times, Wired, Atlantic Monthly, Discover bestselling author Steven Kotler has written extensively about those pivotal moments when science fiction became science fact…and fundamentally reshaped the world. Now he gathers the best of his best, updated and expanded upon, to guide readers on a mind-bending tour of the far frontier, and how these advances are radically transforming our lives. From the ways science and technology are fundamentally altering our bodies and our world (the world’s first bionic soldier, the future of evolution) to those explosive collisions between science and culture (life extension and bioweapons), we’re crossing moral and ethical lines we’ve never faced before.

As Kotler writes, “Life is tricky sport—and that's the emotional core of this story, the real reason we can’t put Pandora back in the box. When you strip everything else away, technology is nothing more than the promise of an easier tomorrow. It’s the promise of hope. And how do you stop hope?”

Join Kotler in this fascinating exploration of our incredible next: a deep dive into those future technologies happening now—and what it means to be a part of this brave new world.

Review :
Highly Recommended
I enjoyed this book. I am not a scientist and while I am at least familiar with most of the concepts approached in the book, I am far from well-read on these things; so I looked forward to getting informed on some important technological advances happening, and I was particularly intrigued by the idea of the author comparing these advances to what was predicted about them in science fiction books from decades past.

I *did* learn a lot. About the scientific development - and challenges therein - of everything from flying cars to artificial vision implants, from psychedelic medicine to stem cell research, bionic limbs to genetically engineered creatures, etc. Kotler writes in a way that's both intelligent yet approachable - such that I believe professionals in these fields could be interested in his writings, yet lay people can understand them. He's witty at times yet utterly serious when such a tone is called for. I enjoyed his writing style, just as I did the content of the...
An intriguing glimpse into our possible futures
Tomorrowland is a collection of pieces Kotler wrote for various major publications (NY times, Wired, etc) where he explores the capacity of Human invention and what it can mean for our futures. Since it is a compilation of diverse articles, the switch of topics from chapter to chapter can be a little sudden. However, if you approach it as a collection of articles this book is fascinating.

The first third of this book is about the ways that science and technology are already altering humans (bionic limbs, vision implants, etc), the second is about the way they are reshaping the world we live in (genetically engineered insects, asteroid mining, etc) and the third explores what happens when science clashes with culture and the new advances are creating controversy and dismantling a world we recognize and are comfortable in. While I enjoyed the entire book I found the last third to be most thought provoking. As technology moves at a pace that the human race has never dealt with...
An interesting look at a few of the scientific breakthroughs of the past decades
When I was a child, it looked like the future was almost here. Things that were once only found in science fiction books were becoming real. Men were flying rocket belts across stadiums and rocket ships into space. Giant electronic brains were being built. Nuclear power was revolutionizing the grid. New drugs were said to be cures for mental illness. The President promised we'd go to the moon before the end of the decade. Soon, I thought, we'd all be taking our personal jet packs and autogyros to the local spaceport, where we'd ride a rocket to a space station and spend our holidays exploring the solar system... Jump ahead to 2015: Diseases are still the bane of human kind, nuclear power gave us TMI and Chernobyl, and we're still stuck in low Earth orbit, and no one's set foot on the moon in 43 years. What happened?

What happened,, says Steven Kotler, is that we have come a very long way since then. It's just that we took a slightly different route. Private space flight is...
